Soren’s First Birthday Session at Our NYC Studio

Soren’s NYC first birthday photoshoot began with family portraits at our Flatiron studio. We photographed him with his parents and older sister against a simple white backdrop, giving them photos of everyone together before moving on to his birthday setup.

Family Portraits and Photos with His Big Sister

Soren’s sister joined him for a few portraits of just the two of them. I love including family and sibling photos in first birthday sessions. The birthday is the reason everyone comes in, but these portraits show what the whole family looked like at this moment, too.

We also made time for photos of Soren on his own. Starting with the simple white backdrop gave us portraits that feel different from the cake smash photos, while still fitting naturally into the same gallery.

A Soft Blue First Birthday Cake Smash

For Soren’s cake smash, we kept the setup simple with soft blue balloons and a white cake. His pale blue outfit was from El Rincón de María and looked lovely with the set.

We took some birthday portraits before introducing the cake. That way, Soren’s family had photos of him in his outfit before any frosting appeared. Then we gave him time to explore the cake at his own pace. Some babies go straight for it; others need a little time to decide what they think. There’s no need to rush either way.

Planning a First Birthday Photoshoot in NYC

A first birthday session at our NYC studio can include portraits of your baby, photos with siblings and parents, and a cake smash. You don’t have to choose between family photos and birthday photos—we can plan time for both.

I recommend choosing outfits that work well together without needing everyone to match exactly. For the cake smash, a simple outfit and a few colors in the backdrop keep the focus on your baby. Soren’s soft blue setup is a good example of how a small amount of color can still feel clean and classic.

If you’d like to plan a first birthday session, get in touch and tell me what you have in mind. I’d be happy to help you plan the portraits, outfits, and cake smash setup.
