First Birthday Cake Smash Session in NYC Studio

There’s something really special about getting to photograph a family more than once — especially when it comes full circle like this.

A few years ago, I photographed big sister’s cake smash session, and now I had the chance to capture her little sister’s first birthday here at my NYC studio. Watching these moments repeat themselves in a new way always feels so meaningful.

We started with family portraits on a clean white backdrop — something timeless that keeps the focus exactly where it should be. Big sister was right by her side the entire time, and you could feel that bond already forming. Those quiet in-between moments are always the ones I love most.

After portraits, we moved into the cake smash portion of the session.

The setup stayed soft and minimal, letting her personality lead. A simple cake, neutral tones, and just enough detail to mark the occasion without overwhelming it. She was a little unsure at first (as most babies are), but quickly warmed up — and once she did, it turned into the sweetest mix of curiosity, tiny smiles, and frosting-covered hands.

Big sister, of course, was right there cheering her on — which made the whole experience even more special.

Cake smash sessions are always about more than just the cake. They’re about documenting a full year — how much has changed, and the family that surrounds it. These are the kinds of images that become part of your home over time — framed, printed, and revisited for years to come.

If you’re planning a first birthday session, I typically recommend scheduling around 10–11 months if you’d like your images ready in time for their birthday.
