There’s something really special about first birthdays — it’s such a big milestone, but still feels so soft and fleeting at the same time.

This recent cake smash session at my NYC studio was one of those. Mom chose a soft blue palette for the balloons and details, which kept everything feeling simple and timeless while still celebrating the moment in a meaningful way.
We always start these sessions with a few portraits before the cake — clean, classic images that focus on your baby just as they are right now. No distractions, just those little expressions you never want to forget.
Then we moved into the cake smash.
The setup stayed true to my style — minimal, light-filled, and intentional. A simple white cake paired with the soft blue tones created the perfect balance. Nothing overwhelming, just enough to make it feel like a first birthday.
He took his time at first (they always do), but once he got curious, it turned into the sweetest little moment. Frosting-covered hands, tiny smiles, and that mix of hesitation and excitement that makes these sessions so fun to photograph.

These are the moments that go by so quickly — and the ones that feel even more meaningful when you can hold onto them.
Most families choose to turn their images into albums or framed pieces, and it’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the process. These sessions aren’t just for now — they’re meant to live in your home, not just on your phone.
If you’re planning a first birthday session, I usually recommend scheduling around 10–11 months if you’d like the images ready in time for their birthday.
