NYC First Birthday Portraits: Scarlett’s Soft Pink Cake Smash

These NYC first birthday portraits celebrated Scarlett with two simple and timeless looks. We began with classic portraits in white before moving into a soft pink cake smash with a delicate tulle dress, one pink balloon, and a petite white cake.

The clean studio setting kept the focus on Scarlett’s blue eyes, curious expressions, and growing personality. With plenty of white space and only a few carefully chosen details, the final gallery feels sweet and celebratory without becoming overly themed.

Timeless Portraits Before the Cake

Every first birthday session begins with simple portraits before the cake is introduced. Scarlett wore a beautiful white outfit with an embroidered ruffle collar, which photographed perfectly against the white backdrop.

At this age, even the smallest expressions can change from one frame to the next. Scarlett looked directly into the camera, played with a wooden rattle, and gave us a mix of thoughtful looks and tiny smiles. These images feel less like birthday decorations and more like classic baby portraits her family can display long after the celebration.

I also included a black-and-white version of one portrait. Removing the color brings even more attention to her expression and gives the gallery an additional heirloom quality.

NYC First Birthday Portraits with a Soft Pink Palette

For the second half of the session, Scarlett changed into a pale pink tulle dress. The setup included a single pink balloon tied with ribbon and a petite white cake finished with a soft pink bow. Her name on the cake added a personal detail while preserving the clean, minimal style of the session.

The simple design gave Scarlett space to move, crawl, sit, and explore. Some of the best images came from watching her study the cake, reach toward it, and look back at the camera. Her personality remained the most important part of every photograph.

The cake for my studio cake smash sessions is created by Padoca Bakery. Keeping the cake and decorations understated allows everything to coordinate beautifully while still feeling personal to each baby.

Why Include Both Portraits and a Cake Smash?

Combining a classic portrait set with a cake smash creates more variety in the final gallery. The first look documents the baby at one year in a timeless way, while the second brings in the joy and playfulness of the birthday celebration.

It also gives families photographs that work for different purposes: framed portraits for the home, images for birthday invitations or announcements, and a complete story of the first birthday milestone.

Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday Session in NYC

First birthday sessions are designed around each baby’s personality and stage. Some babies are confidently walking, while others prefer sitting or crawling. There is no expectation for the baby to perform or react to the cake in a particular way. We simply allow time for them to become comfortable and create portraits that feel true to who they are right now.
