NYC Family Photographer | A Fall Session in Central Park

As an NYC family photographer, I spend a lot of October evenings in Central Park — and sessions like this one are exactly why. A family of four, golden hour light, leaves just starting to turn, and a golden retriever who took his job as the fifth family member very seriously. We wandered from Bethesda Terrace to Bow Bridge and let the evening unfold, and the gallery feels like fall in New York in the best possible way.

Why Fall Is the Best Time to Book Your NYC Family Photographer

If you’ve been searching for an NYC family photographer, autumn in Central Park makes a strong case for booking sooner rather than laterThe light gets soft and warm earlier in the evening, the crowds thin out just enough, and the park does half the styling work for you with all that color in the trees. For this session we timed everything around golden hour, which gave us that glowy, backlit warmth you can see in every frame — especially as the sun dropped low over the water near Bow Bridge.

Fall dates book quickly every year, so if a session like this is on your list, reaching out in late summer gives you the best pick of golden hour time slots.

Central Park Spots This NYC Family Photographer Loves

One of my favorite things about photographing families in Central Park is that we’re never stuck in one spot. We started near Bethesda Fountain, where the open terrace gives kids space to move and gives me those classic New York backdrops. From there we made our way to Bow Bridge, where the carved stone railing and the light off the lake made the sweetest setting for mom and her baby girl — that laugh she gave while being lifted into the air might be my favorite image of the whole session.

Big brother had his own moment too, sitting in the grass with his little sister in his lap, both of them in coordinating burgundy. Those sibling portraits are the ones parents come back to years later.

Yes, Bring the Dog

I always tell families: if your dog is part of the family, bring them. This golden retriever walked the paths with us on his leash, trotted alongside dad, and added so much life to the candid frames. Some of the most natural moments in this gallery happened while everyone was simply walking together — dad holding his son’s hand, mom carrying the baby, the dog leading the way toward the fountain. Those in-between moments are what I love to document most.

What This Family Wore (and Why It Worked)

This crew nailed the fall palette without looking overly matched. Mom wore a cream long-sleeve top with a navy skirt and brown suede boots, dad kept it classic in a white polo and navy chinos, big brother wore burgundy with khakis, and baby sister’s berry floral top tied the whole palette together. Layers helped too — a herringbone coat for him and a cream pea coat for her meant we could switch up the look mid-session as the evening cooled off.

If you’re not sure what to wear for your own session, I always send styling guidance before we shoot, and the studio closet is available for the littlest members of the family.

Fall Mini Sessions Are Coming This October

If this session has you dreaming about your own family’s fall photos, I have good news: I’m hosting Central Park mini sessions this October, spread across several weekends so you can find a date that works for your family. Fall is the busiest season for any NYC family photographer, and these dates go fast — priority booking opens August 9th.

You can learn more about fall sessions here or send me a note and I’ll make sure you’re on the list before booking opens.
