Baby’s first holiday photos NYC families ask me about start earlier than you’d think — often before the baby is even here. And I understand why. The first December only happens once, and it happens fast. By the second one, the baby who couldn’t sit up is running past the tree. If you’re deciding whether the first year is worth documenting, this session is my answer. (For the bigger picture on why these photos matter, I wrote about nyc holiday portraits here.

This sweet girl came in at 8 months — one of my favorite ages for a first holiday session. Old enough to sit up and take everything in, young enough to stay right where you put her, and at peak personality. Every expression is fully committed.
She wore a dusty blue velvet dress with a lace collar from the studio closet, with a simple white bow — and spent most of the session in the wicker bassinet, completely delighted with herself. The gold jingle bell was the real star: she claimed it early and held on for most of the set.

At this age, I keep the session short and follow the baby’s lead entirely. Sitting poses in and around the bassinet, something to hold, plenty of breaks — the best frames never come from posing a baby. They come from letting a baby be exactly 8 months old while I document it.
The evergreen blanket lining the bassinet is from ChappyWrap, one of my favorites for holiday sets.
For parents wondering about timing: mornings are almost always the answer. Book after that first nap and a good feed, and you’ll get the happiest, most awake version of your baby — the smiles in this gallery are what 10 AM looks like. The session itself is short by design, about 15 minutes. Fifteen minutes with a content baby beats an hour with an overtired one, every time.

For me it’s the frame with the “My First Christmas” keepsake sign resting on her lap. Right now it reads as sweet. In fifteen years it will read as evidence — proof of exactly who she was the first December she was here. That’s the difference between a photo taken now and a photo made for later.
If your baby’s first holiday season is this one, the studio’s event this year is Velvet Bleu — deep burgundy, powder blue, and emerald green, all in velvet. Priority booking opens August 2nd, and general booking opens August 3rd. First-holiday spots go quickly because the timing window is real: babies don’t stay this small until you get around to it.
If a session like this one is something you’d want for your own family, I’d love to make it happen. Reach out here and let’s talk about what would feel right for you.
Love, Melissa
