As an NYC studio family photographer, sessions like this one are exactly what I live for — three sisters, three personalities, and one session that somehow managed to capture all of it.
This family came into the studio on a bright spring morning — mom, dad, three girls in the most beautiful embroidered heirloom dresses, and their French bulldog who had absolutely no interest in looking at the camera. It was perfect.
What you see in these images is what happens when kids are just allowed to be themselves. The oldest holding her little sisters close. Just three sisters doing what sisters do.
The individual portraits — each girl on her own — are always one of my favorite parts of a family session. There is something about stopping to document each child separately, at exactly this age, exactly this stage. You don’t realize how fast it moves until you’re looking at a photograph of it.
A white studio backdrop does one thing really well — it removes every distraction and puts the focus entirely on the people. No busy backgrounds, no harsh outdoor light, no wind in the hair at the wrong moment. Just your family, beautifully lit, with nowhere to hide and nothing to compete with.
It’s also forgiving in the best way. Kids who are nervous warm up quickly in a contained space. Energy that might feel chaotic outside becomes playful and real in the studio. And the images have a timeless quality that doesn’t date — you won’t look back in ten years and wonder what year it was.
This family brought their own heirloom pieces — hand-embroidered dresses in cream and ivory. They photograph beautifully and they mean something. That’s the whole point.
If you don’t have heirloom pieces, I have a full client wardrobe available at the studio. (Up to 2T).
Dressing the whole family is something I love helping with — cohesion matters, and it doesn’t have to mean everyone matches exactly.
