NYC First Birthday Photography | Brooks Turns One

NYC First Birthday Photographer — Heirloom Portraits at Our Flatiron Studio

NYC first birthday photography at Heirloom by Melissa always starts the same way — and there is a reason for it.

Before the cake. Before the balloons. Before anything gets messy or exciting — I sit your baby down on a clean white background and just photograph them. No distractions. No props. Just them, exactly as they are on this one specific day that will never come again. The way their cheeks look right now. The way they tilt their head. The little curl behind the ear. That is what I am after first.

With Brooks, that meant working around a one year old who had a lot of feelings about the whole thing — which honestly made the session. His mom was incredible, keeping him entertained with toys between shots, and those real unposed moments of him looking up, crawling toward us, checking everything out — that is the stuff you cannot plan for.

Why I Always Start NYC First Birthday Photography With Heirloom Portraits

There is a reason I call these heirloom portraits — because that is exactly what they are. At one year old, your baby is right in the middle of one of the fastest-moving seasons of childhood. They are crawling, pulling up, taking those first wobbly steps, discovering everything around them. And then just like that, it is over and they are a toddler.

First birthday photography NYC sessions at Heirloom by Melissa are designed to freeze this exact moment. The all-white background is intentional — it keeps the focus entirely on your baby, nothing competing, nothing dated. Just them, beautifully lit, exactly as they are today.

The Paz Rodriguez Outfit — Classic Style for a First Birthday

Brooks wore the most beautiful outfit from Paz Rodriguez — a Spanish children’s clothing brand known for their timeless, elegant designs. If you are looking for first birthday outfit inspiration, Paz Rodriguez is absolutely worth exploring. The all-white look paired perfectly with our studio aesthetic and photographed beautifully.

If you are not sure what to dress your little one in for their session, I am always happy to help with styling guidance — just ask when you reach out to book your session.

The Cake Smash — Brooks Takes on His First Birthday Cake

After our heirloom portrait portion wrapped up, we brought out the balloons, the cake, and the birthday setup — and Brooks had things to say about that too. He went after that cake with full commitment, and the blue and green balloon garland behind him made the whole setup feel soft, fresh and perfectly him.

This is exactly why I love doing first birthday photography NYC sessions this way — you get two completely different looks in one session. The clean, classic portraits and the fun, celebratory cake smash. Both tell a different part of the story of who your child is at one.
